to the Driving School Association of Louisiana, Inc. Our organization is made up of Professional Driving Schools who currently teach the required 38 Hour Driver Education Course. Many of the members teach other safety courses and offer a variety of training options.

Our association began in 1995 while meeting in New Orleans at a national association for driving schools. We have been working with our state for many years now to save lives on Louisiana 's highways.

DSAL MISSION STATEMENT

  • To help create a safer driving environment in Louisiana through a pro-active stance of driver education and any passenger safety-related issues.
  • To create harmony among professional driving schools in Louisiana.
  • To raise the standards of all schools and their instructors.
  • To help and cooperate with the Office of Motor Vehicles in development and execution of its laws.

 Louisiana Legislative Update

  • Effective July 1, 2009, anyone operating a vehicle with a license that was suspended shall be imprisoned for not less than 15 days. If the suspension was for manslaughter, vehicular homicide or negligent homicide resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle, the sentence shall be for not less than 60 days without benefit of suspension.
  • Effective August 1, 2009, a chemical analysis test for intoxication will be performed on the operator of a watercraft involved in a fatality crash.
  • Effective August 15, 2009, all occupants must buckle up, including back seat passengers over 12 years of age. It remains a primary law.
  • Effective August 15, 2009, motor vehicle operators must leave at least 3 feet safe distance when passing or overtaking a bicyclist traveling in the same direction.
  • Effective August 15, 2009, on multi-lane highways, no vehicle is to be driven in the left-hand lane except when directed otherwise, preparing for a left turn at an intersection or private road or driveway, overtaking or passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction, or when right-hand lanes are congested.
  • Effective September 1, 2009, refusal to submit to a chemical analysis test for intoxication will result in the suspension of the driver's license for 1 year on the first offense and 2 years for subsequent offenses. Also, no hardship license can be issued if a fatality or serious injury occurred from the crash and the intoxication was determined to be a factor.
